Last week the scientists and space fans all over the world had a possibility to witness a big step in the exploring of space live on TV. NBC News story will explain us what it was and how it can help us solve the biggest mystery of life. Don’t miss an extra video from BBC which will explain what a 67P is in 60 seconds. Background – names, organizations and event you should know about: Comet Churyumov – Gerasimenko or simply 67P is a comet with a current orbital period of 6.45 years,a rotation period of approximately 12.4 hours and a maximum velocity of 135,000 km/h (38 km/s).67P is approximately 4.1 kilometres by 4.3 kilometres at its widest and longest dimensions.It will next come to perihelion (closest approach to the Sun) on 13 August 2015.Like most comets, it is named after its discoverers, Ukrainian astronomers Klim Ivanovych Churyumov and Svetlana Ivanovna Gerasimenko. They first observed it on photographic plates in 1969. Rosetta is a robotic space probe built and launched by the European Space Agency to perform a detailed study of comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko (67P). Rosetta was launched on 2 March 2004 and reached the comet on 6 August 2014, becoming the first spacecraft to orbit a comet. The spacecraft consists of two main elements: the Rosetta space probe orbiter, which features 12 instruments, and the Philae robotic lander, with nine additional instruments.The Rosetta mission will orbit 67P for 17 months and is designed to complete the most detailed study of a comet ever attempted. The mission is controlled from the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC), in Darmstadt, Germany. In order to understand this video we’ll need to know the following words. |

“Despite” is a word that means “regardless of, without being affected by”. We usually use it when we need to contrast two points in the sentence. “Despite the good news” means that we do have some good news but right now there’s another aspect to it, in our case confusion.
Despite has a synonym – in spite of. These two phrases are identical in meaning. The only difference is a preposition “of” which must be used in “in spite of”. We use noun or pronoun after despite or in spite of:
There’s also a little trick, when we can’t find a noun. We’ll say: In this case you can continue with a usual sentence.

We are used to the fact that two verbs following each other need some connection: -ing form, to infinitive or bare infinitive. And usually there’s only one way to connect the verbs. But in same cases it isn’t so. “That could help to solve” and “that could help solve” would have absolutely identical meaning. |
