Top News. Сонячне затемнення

Solar eclipse became last week’s “big thing”. It was in the news, all over the social networks and in the streets.  The proportion of the sun covered by the moon was 84% in London, that’s why thousands of people went outside to see it. BBC will tell us what it was like.

Fun facts about solar eclipse:

  • The longest a total solar eclipse can last for is 7.5 minutes, but this is usually a lot less
  • Total eclipses can only occur due to a strange coincidence that the Sun and the Moon both appear to be the same size
  • Total solar eclipses cannot be seen from the North or South Pole.
  • Temperatures can drop by 20 degrees Celsius nearing totality.
  • A total solar eclipse is not noticeable until the Sun is covered 90% by the Moon. When the Moon covers the Sun by 99% the sky resembles twilight.
  • Nearing or during totality, birds and animals can be seen to behave strangely due to the sudden darkening in the sky. Some animals have even been known to prepare for sleep!

In order to understand this video we’ll need to know the following words.

Language

Just seemed too good an opportunity to miss.

This phrase is used to say that something is inadequate (below what we want) or excessive (above what we want).
For example, this man thinks that the opportunity was extremely good, more than he expected = too good to miss.

We make it by adding:
too + adjective + to infinitive

Let’s say I came to the bank to pay my utility bill. But there are some many people there, so the queue is too long to stand in it.
Or I see a purse that I like and want to buy it. But it’s just too cheap to be made of real leather.
A really common phrase that you can use with too + adjective istoo good to be true

Ця фраза використовується, коли ми говоримо про недостачу (менше, ніх нам хотілося б) або надлишок (більше ніж нам хотілося б).
Наприклад, цей чоловік думає, що нагода була напрочуд гарною, більше ніж він сподівався = too good to miss (занадто гарною, щоб пропустити).

Ми утворюємо такі фрази додаючи таке:
too + прикметник + to інфінітив

Скажімо, я прийшла в банк, щоб заплатити за комунальні послуги. Але там багато людей, отже черга задовга, щоб у ній стояти (too long to stand in it).
Чи я хочу придбати сумку, але вона (too cheap to be made) занадто дешева, щоб бути зробленою зі шкіри.
Досить часто використовується наступна фраза з too+прикметник: занадто гарно, щоб бути правдою

Language Task

Rewrite the following phrases with too + adjective.
1.    She can’t drive, she’s only 15. = She is too…
2.    I don’t want to stand up and cook. = I am too…
3.    I have a very old computer at home and I can’t sell it. = It’s too…
4.    Don’t argue with him, he is really clever. = He is too…
5.    I can’t read this book in a week, it’s really long. = It’s too…

PS. This video is of a solar eclipse too, but it was made from the board of a Lufthansa plane – a pretty cool place to watch the eclipse, I’d say.

ЗИ: Це теж відео сонячного затемнення, але воно було зняте з борта літака Люфтханза – досить круте місце, щоб спостерігати за затемненням, я б сказала.
