Solar eclipse became last week’s “big thing”. It was in the news, all over the social networks and in the streets. The proportion of the sun covered by the moon was 84% in London, that’s why thousands of people went outside to see it. BBC will tell us what it was like.

Fun facts about solar eclipse:

The longest a total solar eclipse can last for is 7.5 minutes, but this is usually a lot less
Total eclipses can only occur due to a strange coincidence that the Sun and the Moon both appear to be the same size
Total solar eclipses cannot be seen from the North or South Pole.
Temperatures can drop by 20 degrees Celsius nearing totality.
A total solar eclipse is not noticeable until the Sun is covered 90% by the Moon. When the Moon covers the Sun by 99% the sky resembles twilight.
Nearing or during totality, birds and animals can be seen to behave strangely due to the sudden darkening in the sky. Some animals have even been known to prepare for sleep!

Language

Just seemed too good an opportunity to miss.

This phrase is used to say that something is inadequate (below what we want) or excessive (above what we want).
For example, this man thinks that the opportunity was extremely good, more than he expected = too good to miss.

We make it by adding:
too + adjective + to infinitive

Let’s say I came to the bank to pay my utility bill. But there are some many people there, so the queue is too long to stand in it.
Or I see a purse that I like and want to buy it. But it’s just too cheap to be made of real leather.
A really common phrase that you can use with too + adjective is: too good to be true

Эта фраза используется, когда мы говорим о нехватке (менее чем нам хотелось бы) или избыток (более чем нам хотелось бы).
Например, этот человек думает, что возможность была очень хорошей, больше чем он ожидал = too good to miss (слишком хорошей, чтобы пропустить).
