Вживання It's time, I'd rather, I'd better

Автор: Grammar Teacher

Hello, my dear  readers!

Вживання It's time, I'd rather, I'd betterHow often do you have to express your request, advice or preference? Occasionally? Often? Always? If you really need to convey your thoughts in this situations, just continue reading the article! Here we talk about three phrases which help you to deal with enormous cases of  criticism and suggestions.

I'D RATHER

Structure "d' rather' or "would rather" is used to talk about preferring one thing to another (In example  = Patrick prefers staying friends with Spongebob to being intelligent). Would rather has its different constructions. They depend on subjects of the sentence and meaning.
When the subject of  Would rather is also the subject of the following verb, we use the following constructions:

  • Would rather + present bare infinitive (meaning - present/future)

I'd rather do my shopping tomorrow (~ I'd prefer to do my shopping tomorrow)

  • Would rather + perfect  bare infinitive (meaning - past)

I'd rather not have eaten that hamburger last night.

  • Would rather + bare infinitive + than ( +  bare infinitive)

I'd rather watch a comedy than (watch) a horror.

When the structure of Would rather is different from the subject of  the following verb , we use a bit different constructions:

  • Would rather +  past tense (meaning - present/future)

I'd rather Alex called me today.
I'd rather you didn't tell Joanne about this ( ~ If you didn't tell Joanne about this, it would be better)

  • Would rather + past perfect (meaning - past)

I'd rather Juli hadn't taken my suitcase yesterday.

I'D BETTER
What does "d" stand for in this structure?  It's "had"! But it doesn't mean that we use this structure to talk about the past. Moreover, we use it for the future or present situations!

  • I'd better do something = it is advisable to do something; if I don't, there  may be a problem or a danger:

I have to meet my husband in ten minutes. I'd better go now or I'll be late.
We'd better stop for petrol soon. The tank is almost empty.

  • You'd better do something = you warn somebody to do something:

You'd better come on time. You'd better not be late (or you'll miss the meeting)

  • I'd better not =  negative form of the structure:

Are you going out tonight? I'd better not. I've got a lot of work to do.

Вживання It's time, I'd rather, I'd better - 2

IT'S TIME

  • You can say "It's time" for somebody to do something by using this structure  + infinitive to express your opinion or a piece of advice:

It's time (for us) to go home.

  • You can criticize or complain by using this structure + past tense (BUT! meaning is still in present or future):

The windows are very dirty. I think it's time we cleaned them.

  • To make the criticism  stronger you can use "It's high time" or "It's about time":

Jane is a great talker. But it's about time she did something instead of just talking.
You are very selfish. It's high time you realized that you are not only one in the world.

Used to, be used to, get used to, would: у чому різниця?
Якщо з конструкцією used to проблем у студентів не виникає, то be used to, get used to, would можуть заплутати. Щоб зрозуміти й запам’ятати випадки їх використання, подивимось на приклад: Lily used to live in the countryside. Every summer she would walk barefoot along the river in her neighborhood.…
