CNN: как прошел «референдум» в Крыму

The 16th of March passed, with predictable result. Every Ukrainian has his or her own opinion about this event and the situation in Crimea. But what did the media abroad show? Let’s see this “referendum” with the eyes of CNN reporters and audience.

Background – names, organizations and event you should know about:

Perevalne –a village in Crimea. The Ukrainian 36th separate machanised coastal infantry brigade is located there and during the Crimean crisis 2014 was surrounded by the Russian or unknown troops without military rank insignia or cockade.

Sergei Aksyonov - is a Ukrainian politician and de facto Prime Minister of Crimea. During an armed occupation of the Crimean parliament by pro-Russian forces, Aksyonov was subsequently voted into office following a vote of no confidence in the new Ukrainian government.

Voting booth or polling booth is a room or cabin in a polling station where voters are able to cast their vote in private to protect the secrecy of the ballot.

Election monitoring - is the observation of an election by one or more independent parties, typically from another country or a non-governmental organization (NGO), primarily to assess the conduct of an election process on the basis of national legislation and international standards.

Перевальное – село в Крыму. В Перевальном находится 36-я отдельная бригада береговой обороны, которая во время Крымского кризиса 2014 года была окружена российскими или неизвестными военными без опознавательных знаков, воинских званий или кокард.

Сергей Аксенов – украинский политик и де факто премьер-министр Крыма. Во время вооруженной оккупации Крымского парламента пророссийскими силами Аксенов был избран на должность после выражения недоверия новому украинскому правительству.

Polling booth – кабинка для голосования – при секретном голосовании специально оборудованное для сохранения секрета голосования индивидуальное место в помещении для голосования.

Ballot paper – избирательный бюллетень – документ, используемый для голосования на выборах.

Election monitoring – наблюдение за выборами одной или несколькими независимыми сторонами, обычно из другой страны или общественных организаций, в первую очередь, чтобы оценить проведение избирательного процесса на соответствующем национальному законодательству и международным стандартам уровне.

And now replace the highlighted phrases in the following sentences by the ones we learnt. If you have difficulties with the task, try watching and inserting necessary phrases at the same time.

Does raise – this phrase seems weird for common narrative sentence. We are used to seeing this word order in question. But this word order is used in Present Simple and Past Simple when we want to strongly emphasize the sentence and pass some really important information.

In such cases we use auxiliary verb (helping verb) before the verb itself. This emphasis can be translated with the words “actually”, “really”.We give the auxiliary verbs an extra stress in pronunciation to make it sound louder, longer or higher in tone.

Does raise – эта фраза кажется странной для обычного повествовательного предложения. Обычно мы видим такой порядок слов в вопросных предложениях. Но такой порядок слов используется в Present Simple и Past Simple, когда мы хотим сильно подчеркнуть предложение и донести какую-то действительно важную информацию.

В таких случаях мы ставим вспомогательный глагол перед самим глаголом. Такое ударение может быть переведено как "действительно", "таки". При произношении эти вспомогательные глаголы следует сильнее подчеркнуть, чтобы они звучали громче, длиннее или же на тон выше.

I do know that I can’t drink alcohol with these pills, stop repeating it, please. (I actually know, Я таки знаю)
I did close the door, I checked twice. I don’t know why it’s opened now. (I really closed, Я действительно закрыл)
He does like bananas he is just not hungry. (He actually likes, Он действительно любит)
She did tell me the truth. (She really told, Она действительно сказала)

But what we also cannot ignore is this music that is filling the air around you.

What we see in this sentence is another way of emphasizing.It is an example of cleft sentence.
Usually such sentence consists of two parts and each of them has a verb in it.

This is the structure of such cleft sentences:

Что мы видим в этом предложении, так это еще один способ делать смысловое ударение. Это пример cleft sentence – разделенного предложения. Обычно такое предложение состоит из двух частей, в каждой из них есть глагол.

Это структура такого предложения:

What I like about you is your honesty. – I like your honesty
(Что мне в тебе нравится, так это честность – Мне нравится твоя честность)
What we all needed was your support. – We needed your support.

What I won’t understand is your fear of cats. – I won’t understand your fear of cats.
(Что я никогда не пойму, так это твой страх перед котами. – Я никогда не пойму твой страх перед котами)
