One of the most extraordinary and inspiring stories last week was about this amazing young girl from Pakistan, Malala Yousafzai who became a Nobel Peace Prize winner at the age of 17. Watch the CBS Evening News story about Malala and her co-winner from India Kailash Satyarthi.

Background – names, organizations and event you should know about:

The Nobel Peace Prize is one of the five Nobel Prizes created by the Swedish industrialist, inventor, and armaments manufacturer Alfred Nobel, along with the prizes in Chemistry, Physics, Physiology or Medicine, and Literature. According to Nobel’s will it has been awarded annually (with some exceptions) to those who have "done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses". The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded 95 times to 128 Nobel Laureates between 1901 and 2014, 103 individuals and 25 organizations. Due to its political nature, the Nobel Peace Prize has, for most of its history, been the subject of controversies.

Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani activist for female education. She is known mainly for human rights advocacy for education and for women in her native Swat Valley in northwest Pakistan, where the local Taliban had at times banned girls from attending school. In early 2009, when she was 11–12, Yousafzai wrote a blog under a pseudonym for the BBC detailing her life under Taliban occupation, their attempts to take control of the valley, and her views on promoting education for girls in the Swat Valley. On the afternoon of 9 October 2012, Yousafzai boarded her school bus in the northwest Pakistani district of Swat. A gunman asked for her by name, then pointed a pistol at her and fired three shots.

Kailash Satyarthi is an Indian children's rights activist and a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. He founded the Bachpan Bachao Andolan (lit. Save the Childhood Movement) in 1980 and has acted to protect the rights of more than 83,000 children from 144 countries. Satyarthi has highlighted child labor as a human rights issue as well as a welfare matter and charitable cause. He has argued that it perpetuates poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, population growth, and other social problems, and his claims have been supported by several studies. He has also had a role in linking the movement against child labour with efforts for achieving "Education for All".

In order to understand this video we’ll need to know the following words.

1.    Today a Nobel Peace Prize committee connected a generation and a hostile international border to select the 2014 winners.
2.    This is really an encouragement for me to continue and to believe in myself, to know that there are people who are supporting me in this movement.
3.    Malala was shot in the head by the Taliban for demanding the girls have the right to an education
4.    She spent nearly four months getting better in a hospital.
5.    Nor prevent her from speaking.
6.    I am really devoted and I want to do what I have already dreamed for and that is for education.
7.    …which Scott as you know is extraordinary, given the pressure between these two countries.
8.    She has this confidence, this calmness about her that is extraordinary.
9.    And it shocked me today that she made this invitation because it shows that her plea is greater that just on girls’ education.

Language 1

She spent nearly four months recovering in a hospital.

Nearly is one of the degree adverbs, which are used to talk about quantity or measurements. It’s not the only adverb that is used this way though. The most common ones are nearly, about, roughly and approximately.

Approximately is a formal variant, which you may use in written language or official reports but won’t use it while speaking.
Approximately half of the respondents refused to state their salary.
Roughly, nearly and about are quite casual and can be used in everyday speech. We can easily interchange roughly and about, but nearly has a slightly different meaning.
Nearly means “not quite”, “almost”, so usually the actually number is less than the one given in the sentence. Malala spent nearly four months recovering = means that she spent a little bit less that four months.
Or let’s say this news coverage is nearly 3 minutes. (it’s a little bit less)
Roughly and about might refer to both: a bit more or a bit less.
There were about 50 people at the party (maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less)
We will be home in roughly 5 minutes (maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less).

Language 2

They both agreed they would invite the Prime Ministers of Pakistan and India to join them when they receive the award, which Scott as you know is extraordinary, given the tensions between these two countries.

What does this “given” mean? And is it some kind of passive voice? – The answer is no.
Given means that we assume something is true, it is common knowledge and doesn’t have to be doubted.

  • Given his character, he’ll walk you home. (He always walks girls home, you shouldn’t doubt it.)

In this case it’s introducing the new clause of the sentence, which turns it into a transition word.
Given (that) means that we take some fact into consideration, in this case the tensions between India and Pakistan.

  • What Malala and Kailash agreed to do is extraordinary considering the fact that (given) their countries have really complicated relationship.

But given (that) can also introduce condition. In this case its synonyms would be: provided (that), granted (that), supposing (that), assuming (that)

  • The boss will let us go given that there are no clients in the afternoon.

Ok, are you ready for a little language task?

В этом случае его синонимами являются: provided (that), granted (that), supposing (that), assuming (that).
