Language

And that’s pretty much there is to say.

Pretty much – really pretty, beautiful or just good-looking? Unfortunately, none of the above.
In this phrase word “pretty” has nothing to do with appearance. It’s talking about an extent, degree of something. Pretty much means kind of, quite, more or less.

But why do we use “pretty”? This is one of ways to express your feelings when you tell stories in everyday, casual speech. In this case pretty is used as an adverb and means “somewhat”, “so-so”, “kind of”. It can be used before an adjective or an adverb

For example:

  • This chocolate is pretty good, but I’ve tasted better. (this chocolate is somewhat/kind of good)
  • He’s pretty smart. (the boy is somewhat smart)
  • I’m pretty sure I’m going to the seaside. (I’m almost sure, kind of sure)
  • That’s pretty much all I wanted to say. (it’s kind of all the information)

Language Task

Decide if pretty is used as adjective (meaning beautiful) or adverb (meaning kind of)

4.    We’ve been pretty busy these days.
5.    I’ve never seen such a pretty dress.
