UT: Гогольфест і роздуми про війну

Dear readers, welcome back to our Tuesday Newsday. A lot has happened since our last news video. Unfortunately, not many of them made us feel optimistic. But there are some positive changes too. One of them is a Ukrainian English-speaking channel – Ukraine Today. If you still haven’t heard or seen it, you’ve got the chanсe to find out about this years’ Gogolfest from the UT’s video.

Background – names, organizations and event you should know about:

Gogolfest – is an annual multidisciplinary international festival of contemporary art and cinema in Kyiv, Ukraine, The festival is dedicated to the famous writer Nikolai Gogol. The festival showcases theater, music, film, literature and visual art.This year Gogolfest is scheduled for September 11-21.

In order to understand this video we’ll need to know the following words.

ГОГОЛЬFEST – щорічний мультидисциплінарний міжнародний фестиваль сучасного мистецтва та кіно (Київ, Україна). Фестиваль присвячений відомому письменнику Миколі Гоголю. Програма фестивалю складається з п'яти напрямків: театр, музика, кіно, література та візуальне мистецтво. Цього року Гогольфест пройде з 11 по 21 вересня.

And now replace the highlighted phrases in the following sentences by the ones we learnt. If you have difficulties with the task, try watching and inserting necessary phrases at the same time.

Every day our actions and thoughts are influenced by numerous people and events. At the same time we also influence others as well. “Make someone do something” is one of phrases that lets us explain in what way this influence works.

Make + object (who) + bare infinitive (do what) 

This phrase means that someone or something forced us to act in a certain way. So “political upheaval made organizers think” means that “it forced the organizers to think twice, though they didn’t want it”.

More examples below: 

Щодня безліч людей та подій вплівають на наші дії та думки. В той же час, ми також впливаємо на інших. “Make someone do something” – одна з фраз, що дозволяє нам пояснити, що саме це за вплив. 

Make (примусити) + об’єкт (кого) + інфінітив без “to” (що робити)

Ця фраза означає, що хтось чи щось примусило нас вести себе певним чином. Отже “political upheaval made organizers think” означає, що “організаторів примусили подумати двічі, хоча вони цього самі й не хотіли”.

Далі більше прикладів:

• Tom’s mom made him clean his room. (She forced Tom though he didn’t want to do it. Вона примусила Тома, хоча той не хотів цього робити.)
• Who made you wear this ugly t-shirt? – Actually, it’s my favorite t-shirt. (Who forced you? Хто тебе примусив?)
• Nobody can make me eat insects. I think it’s absolutely disgusting. (Nobody can force me to do it. Ніхто не може примусити мене це зробити)
• I didn’t make you sell the car. (I didn’t force you. Я тебе не заставляла)

And our great artists, they can express themselves.

If you look at this sentence, you’ll see that I highlighted two phrases: our great artists and they. What’s so unusual about them? They both refer to the same thing: our great artists are “they” the girl is talking about, in other words both refer the same subject. 

BUT the thing is that this sentencedoesn’t need two subjects. Repeating subject is a common mistake made by those who study English as their second language as well as native speakers themselves. If we rephrase this sentence, it will sound more natural:
Our great artists can express themselves…
They can express themselves…(can be used in case the subject was introduced before and we understand who we are talking about)

Let’s look at a couple of other double subject sentences:

Якщо подивитеся на це речення, помітите, що я виділила дві фрази: our great artists (наші чудові митці) та they (вони). Що тут незвичного? Вони обидві відносяться до одного поняття: наші чудові митці і є ті самі “they”(вони), про яких розповідає дівчина.

АЛЕ справа в тому, що це для цього речення не потрібні два підмета. Повторення підмета – звичайна помилка для тих, хто вивчає англійську да для самих носіїв мови. Якщо перефразуємо це речення, воно буде звучати більш природньо:
Our great artists can express themselves…
They can express themselves…(можна використовувати у тому випадку, якщо підмет був попередньо представлений, і ми розуміємо, про що йдеться мова)

Давайте подивимося ще на кілька речень з подвійним підметом:

My sister she is a student. (She = my sister. Вона = моя сестра)
The game that you played yesterday it was very interesting. (The game that you played yesterday = it. Вона = гра, в яку ти вчора грався)
My parents’ house it can be seen from that hill. (My parents’ house = it. Він = будинок моїх батьків)
The doctor who talked to you yesterday he is busy now. (The doctor who talked to you yesterday = he. Він = лікар, що говорив з тобою вчора)

Example:
He forced me to open the safe. = He made me open the safe.

• The dog forced the burglar jump over the fence. 
• Do you know if someone forced John to say that?
• I never forced you to go to the museumswith me. 
• Computer games force most kids to forget about everything. 
• How to you force such a stubborn person to listen to you?

Example:
My phone it doesn’t work. = My phone  it  doesn’t work. 

• How do you know the professor he is at home?
• Don’t forget to turn the lights them off. 
• Danny’s mother she is very famouse. 
• The mountains we visited they were very beautiful. 
• Tom he doesn’t know anything about cars.
