Language 1

But months of political upheaval … made organizers think twice about holding the festival.

Every day our actions and thoughts are influenced by numerous people and events. At the same time we also influence others as well. “Make someone do something” is one of phrases that lets us explain in what way this influence works.

Make + object (who) + bare infinitive (do what)

This phrase means that someone or something forced us to act in a certain way. So “political upheaval made organizers think” means that “it forced the organizers to think twice, though they didn’t want it”.

More examples below:

Каждый день множество людей и событий влияют на наши действия и мысли. В то же время мы также влияем на других. “Make someone do something” – одна из фраз, позволяющих нам объяснить, что именно это за влияние.

Make (заставить) + объект (кого) + инфинитив без “to” (что делать)

Эта фраза означает, что кто-то или что-то заставило вести себя определенным образом. Итак, "political upheaval made organizers think" означает, что "организаторов заставили подумать дважды, хотя они этого сами и не хотели".

Дальше больше примеров:

  • Tom’s mom made him clean his room. (She forced Tom though he didn’t want to do it. Она заставила Тома, хотя тот не хотел этого делать.)
  • Who made you wear this ugly t-shirt? – Actually, it’s my favorite t-shirt. (Who forced you? Кто тебя заставил?)
  • Nobody can make me eat insects. I think it’s absolutely disgusting. (Nobody can force me to do it. Никто не может заставить меня это сделать)
  • I didn’t make you sell the car. (I didn’t force you. Я тебя не заставляла)

Language 2

And our great artists, they can express themselves.

If you look at this sentence, you’ll see that I highlighted two phrases: our great artists and they. What’s so unusual about them? They both refer to the same thing: our great artists are “they” the girl is talking about, in other words both refer the same subject.

BUT the thing is that this sentencedoesn’t need two subjects. Repeating subject is a common mistake made by those who study English as their second language as well as native speakers themselves. If we rephrase this sentence, it will sound more natural:
Our great artists can express themselves…
They can express themselves…(can be used in case the subject was introduced before and we understand who we are talking about)

Let’s look at a couple of other double subject sentences:

Если посмотреть на это предложение, заметите, что я выделила две фразы: our great artists (наши замечательные художники) и they (они). Что здесь необычного? Они обе относятся к одному понятию: наши замечательные художники и есть те самые “they” (они), о которых рассказывает девушка.

НО дело в том, что это для этого предложения не нужны два подлежащих. Повторение подлежащего – обычная ошибка для тех, кто изучает английский, да для самих носителей языка. Если перефразируем это предложение, оно будет звучать более естественно: Our great artists can express themselves… They can express themselves… (можно использовать в том случае, если подлежащее было предварительно представлено, и мы понимаем, о чем идет речь)

Давайте посмотрим еще на несколько предложений с двойным подлежащим:

My sister she is a student. (She = my sister. Она = моя сестра)
The game that you played yesterday it was very interesting. (The game that you played yesterday = it. Она = игра, в которую ты вчера играл)
My parents’ house it can be seen from that hill. (My parents’ house = it. Он = дом моих родителей)
The doctor who talked to you yesterday he is busy now. (The doctor who talked to you yesterday = he. Он = врач, говоривший с тобой вчера)

Ok, are you ready for a little grammar task?

Ну что, готовы к небольшому грамматическому заданию?
