Sky News: Про незворотність впливу глобального потепління

On Monday the UN released a new report on environment and global warming. This issue, which seems quite obvious at first, turns out to be quite controversial. Some people believe it’s happening, others are skeptical and compare it to believing in aliens. I’m sure you’ve got an opinion of your own. But what does the UN have to say about it?

Climate Change is a change in weather patterns in time. It may be a change in average weather conditions, more or fewer extreme weather events etc. Climate change is caused by factors such as biotic processes, variations in solar radiation received by Earth, plate tectonics, and volcanic eruptions. Certain human activities have also been identified as significant causes of recent climate change, often referred to as "global warming".

Global Warming - a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere. Since the early 20th century, the global air and sea surface temperature has increased about 0.8°C, with about two-thirds of the increase occurring since 1980. Each of the last three decades has been successively warmer at the Earth's surface than any preceding decade since 1850.

Greenhouse gases - gases that absorbs thermal radiation of the Earth’s surface (infrared radiation) and reflects it back to the Earth. This process is the fundamental cause of the greenhouse effect. The primary greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere are water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and ozone. Greenhouse gases greatly affect the temperature of the Earth; without them, Earth's surface would average about 33 °C colder.

Дехто вірить, що так і є, інші скептично налаштовані та порівнюють глобальне потепління з вірою в інопланетян. Я впевнена, що у вас є власна думка з цього приводу. А що про це скаже ООН?

Зміна клімату — коливання кліматичних параметрів атмосфери в часі. Це може бути зміна звичних погодних умов, більша або менша кількість екстремальних погодних умов тощо. Зміна клімату зумовлюється такими факторами як біотичні процеси, різна кількість сонячної радіації, яку отримує Земля, тектоніка пліт та виверження вулканів. Певна людська діяльність також була визнана значим фактором останніх змін клімату, що часто називають “глобальним потеплінням”.

Глобальне потепління – поступове підвищення загальної температури земної атмосфери. З початку 20-го століття світова температура повітря та поверхні моря збільшилася на 0,8°C, при цьому 2/3 підвищення відбулося з 1980 року. Кожна з останніх трьох декад була по черзі теплішою на поверхні Землі, ніж будь-яка інша попередня декада починаючи з 1850 року. 

Парникові гази -  газ, що поглинає теплове випромінювання поверхні Землі і хмар (інфрачервона радіація) і відбиває його назад до Землі. Цей процес є основною причиною парникового ефекту. До основних парникових газів в атмосфері Землі відносяться пари води (H2O), вуглекислий газ (CO2), метан (CH4), закис азоту (N2O) та озон. Парникові гази сильно впливають на температуру Землі: без них середня температура Землі була б нижчою на 33°C.

This phrase is used by the speaker to introduce his opinion. I decided to pay attention to this and some other phrases that help us introduce our opinion since it is something we need to do every day while talking, arguing, debating, writing reports, doing homework or just leaving comments online. Moreover, most of us have a habit of using a single phrase with this purpose: I think.  That’s why here are a couple of phrases that will help to start:

1.    I believe that....
2.    As for me, I think/believe that....
3.    In my opinion,
4.    If you ask me,
5.    From my perspective,
6.    In my view,
7.    It is my understanding that....
8.    As I understand it,
9.    As I see it,
10.    It seems to me that....

Доповідач використовує цю фразу, щоб представити свою думку. Я вирішила звернути увагу на цю та ще декілька фраз, що допоможуть представити наші думки, адже це те, що нам потрібно робити щодня, коли ми розмовляємо, сперечаємося, дискутуємо, пишемо доповіді, робимо домашні завдання чи просто коментуємо в Інтернеті. Тим паче, що більшість з нас має звичку використовувати для цього єдину фразу: I think (Я думаю). Тому ось кілька фраз, що допоможуть розпочати:

1.    Я вірю, що...
2.    Як на мене, я думаю/вірю, що...
3.    На мою думку,
4.    Якщо мене спитаєте,
5.    З моєї точки зору, 
6.    З моєї точки зору,
7.    Моє розуміння таке, що...

We can no longer plead ignorance.

No longer is a phrase that goes along with still. 
Still is used with verb to say that the action continues. In general, it’s not used in negative sentences. 
We use no longer in negative sentences to say that the situation changed.
No longer usually replaces not in the sentence. There’s one more phrase that can be used in this case: not…anymore, where not forms the negative of the verbs and anymore goes at the end of the sentence to show the change in situation. 
For example: 

No longer (більше не) - фраза, про яку варто говорити разом зі still (все ще). Still використовується з дієсловом, щоб сказати, що дія продовжується. Загалом, воно не використовується у запереченнях. 
У запереченнях ми використовуємо no longer, щоб сказати, що ситуація змінилася. 
No longer зазвичай замінює not в реченні. 
В цьому випадку можна використовувати ще одну фразу: not…anymore, де not формує заперечення дієслова, а anymore йде вкінці речення, щоб показати зміну ситуації.
Наприклад:

I still love you. (situation continues) – I no longer love you. (situation changed) – I don’t love you anymore. (situation changed) 

He is still sleeping (situation continues) – He is no longer sleeping. (situation changed) – He is not sleeping anymore (situation changed)

I will still help you (situation continues) – I will no longer help you (situation changed) – I will not help you anymore (situation changed)
