On Monday the UN released a new report on environment and global warming. This issue, which seems quite obvious at first, turns out to be quite controversial. Some people believe it’s happening, others are skeptical and compare it to believing in aliens. I’m sure you’ve got an opinion of your own. But what does the UN have to say about it?

Climate Change is a change in weather patterns in time. It may be a change in average weather conditions, more or fewer extreme weather events etc. Climate change is caused by factors such as biotic processes, variations in solar radiation received by Earth, plate tectonics, and volcanic eruptions. Certain human activities have also been identified as significant causes of recent climate change, often referred to as "global warming".

Global Warming - a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere. Since the early 20th century, the global air and sea surface temperature has increased about 0.8°C, with about two-thirds of the increase occurring since 1980. Each of the last three decades has been successively warmer at the Earth's surface than any preceding decade since 1850.

Greenhouse gases - gases that absorbs thermal radiation of the Earth’s surface (infrared radiation) and reflects it back to the Earth. This process is the fundamental cause of the greenhouse effect. The primary greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere are water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and ozone. Greenhouse gases greatly affect the temperature of the Earth; without them, Earth's surface would average about 33 °C colder.

Изменение климата – колебание климатических параметров атмосферы во времени. Это может быть изменение привычных погодных условий, большее или меньшее количество экстремальных погодных условий. Изменение климата обусловлено такими факторами как биотические процессы, разное количество солнечной радиации, получаемой Землей, тектоника плит и извержение вулканов. Определенная человеческая деятельность также признана весомым фактором последних изменений климата, которые часто называют "глобальным потеплением".

Глобальное потепление – постепенное увеличение общей температуры земной атмосферы. С начала 20 века мировая температура воздуха и поверхности моря увеличилась на 0,8°C, при этом 2/3 повышения произошло с 1980 года. Каждая из последних трех декад была поочередно теплее, чем любая другая предыдущая декада начиная с 1850 года.

Парниковые газы – газы, поглощающие тепловое излучение поверхности Земли и облаков (инфракрасная радиация) и отражающие его обратно к Земле. Этот процесс является главной причиной парникового эффекта. К основным парниковым газам в атмосфере Земли относятся пары воды (H2O), углекислый газ (CO2), метан (CH4), закись азота (N2O) и озон. Парниковые газы оказывают сильное влияние на температуру Земли: без них средняя температура Земли была бы ниже на 33°C.

And now replace the highlighted phrases in the following sentences by the ones we learnt. If you have difficulties with the task, try watching and inserting necessary phrases at the same time.

This phrase is used by the speaker to introduce his opinion. I decided to pay attention to this and some other phrases that help us introduce our opinion since it is something we need to do every day while talking, arguing, debating, writing reports, doing homework or just leaving comments online. Moreover, most of us have a habit of using a single phrase with this purpose: I think.  That’s why here are a couple of phrases that will help to start:

2.    As for me, I think/believe that....
3.    In my opinion,
4.    If you ask me,
5.    From my perspective,
6.    In my view,
7.    It is my understanding that....
8.    As I understand it,
9.    As I see it,

Докладчик использует эту фразу, чтобы представить свое мнение. Я решила обратить внимание на эту и еще несколько фраз, которые помогут представить наши мысли, ведь это то, что нам нужно делать каждый день, когда мы разговариваем, спорим, дискутируем, пишем доклады, делаем домашние задания или просто комментируем что-то в интернете. Тем более что большинство из нас имеет привычку использовать для этого единственную фразу: I think (Я думаю). Поэтому несколько фраз, которые помогут начать:

1. Я верю, что...
2. Я думаю/верю, что...
3. По моему мнению,
4. Если меня спросите,
5. С моей точки зрения,
6. С моей точки зрения,

We can no longer plead ignorance.

No longer is a phrase that goes along with still. 
Still is used with verb to say that the action continues. In general, it’s not used in negative sentences. 
We use no longer in negative sentences to say that the situation changed.
No longer usually replaces not in the sentence. There’s one more phrase that can be used in this case: not…anymore, where not forms the negative of the verbs and anymore goes at the end of the sentence to show the change in situation. 
For example: 

No longer (больше не) - фраза, которую следует произносить вместе со still (все еще). Still используется с глаголом, чтобы сказать, что действие продолжается. В общем, оно не используется в возражениях. В возражениях мы используем no longer, чтобы сказать, что ситуация изменилась. No longer обычно заменяет not в предложении.

В этом случае можно использовать еще одну фразу: not…anymore, где not формирует отрицание глагола, а anymore идет в конце предложения, чтобы показать изменение ситуации.
Например:

I still love you. (situation continues) – I no longer love you. (situation changed) – I don’t love you anymore. (situation changed) 

He is still sleeping (situation continues) – He is no longer sleeping. (situation changed) – He is not sleeping anymore (situation changed)

I will still help you (situation continues) – I will no longer help you (situation changed) – I will not help you anymore (situation changed)
