I found this little kind of a news video – actually not news, and more like an opinion – about selfies. A lot of people consider it trendy, at the same time twice as much think it’s stupid. What do CNN people think? Let’s see.

Obama’s Selfie at Nelson Mandela Funeral – President Obama was seen pose for a selfie with British prime minister David Cameron and Danish prime minister HelleThorning-Schmidt during the funeral of Nelson Mandela. The picture of the trio posing for selfie arose a heated debate in media.

Ellen DeGeneres Oscar selfie - the selfie shows Hollywood stars including Jennifer Lawrence, Channing Tatum, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, DeGeneres, Kevin Spacey, Bradley Cooper, Brad Pitt, Lupita Nyong'o and her brother and Angelina Jolie (with her face half obscured). DeGeneres tweeted the picture on her own account and captioned it: "If only Bradley's arm was longer. Best photo ever. #oscars". It broke the record for most retweets, with 1,076,971 in less than an hour. Later it was said that the picture was staged to promote Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3. 

David Ortiz and President Obama’s selfie - turns out the president’s selfie with Red Sox David Ortiz was sponsored by Samsung. The company in a statement said they helped the Red Sox slugger, who was in D.C. for an event at the White House to celebrate the team’s 2013 World Series Championship, take the selfie with President Barack Obama. After this statement the media started a debate on whether Obama knew that Ortiz’s selfie was part of a Samsung promotion.

In order to understand this video we’ll need to know the following words.

This construction is used to speak about something we see, hear, notice, watch etc. 

There are two ways to speak about it:
1.    If we see the whole process from the beginning to the end we use bare infinitive (without to) after see, hear, notice, watch. 
2.    If we see just some part of the process we use V+ing after see, hear, notice, watch. 

In this case millenials saw the government lead us into a housing boom and bust means that the process is over and they saw it from the beginning till its end. 

And they saw the government trying means that the process isn’t over yet, so the millenials can say they saw only a part of it. 

Some other examples are: 

Ця конструкція використовується, щоб говорити про речі, які мибачимо, чуємо, помічаємо, спостерігаємо тощо.

Є два способи про це говорити: 
1.    Якщо ми бачимо весь процес від початку до кінця, ми використовуємо bare infinitive (інфінітив без to) після слів see, hear, notice, watch. 
2.    Якщо ми бачимо якусь частину процесу, ми використовуємо V+ing після see, hear, notice, watch. 

У цьому випадку millenials saw the government lead us into a housing boom and bust означає, щопроцес уже закінчився, і вони бачили його від початку до кінця.

А they saw the government trying означає, що процес ще не закінчився, тому можна сказати, що вони бачили лише його частину.

•    I watched the kids playing in the street. (I saw only part of it. Я бачив лише частину.)

•    We heard the orchestra play the symphony. (We heard it all. Ми слухали всю симфонію.)
•    Mom saw me eat a cookie before lunch. (She saw everything. Вона все бачила)
•    Dad noticed my brother sneaking into his room after midnight. (He noticed my brother in the middle of it. Він помітив мого брата посеред процесу.) 

In contrast, they’ve seen their heroes who have found ways to solve problems on their own.

Today we’ll continue looking at transition words – words and phrases that are used to connect ideas in the sentences and help readers/listeners to pass from one idea to the other one. 
Today we will talk about contrasts.So, while giving two opinions that oppose each other, we can present the second one with this phrase: in contrast. 
For example:

Сьогодні продовжимо розглядати перехідні слова – слова та фрази, що допомагають поєднати ідеї у реченнях та допомагають читачам/слухачам перейти від однієї ідеї до іншої. 
Сьогодні поговоримо про контрасти. Отже, коли подаємо два твердження, що протирічать один одному, ми можемо презентувати друге такою фразою: in contrast.
