How to write the date in English correctly

Author: Ira Omelchenko

In the British version of the English language, dates are most often formed as follows:

  • 15 May 1990
  • 25 October 2007

Don't forget that the names of months should be capitalized. In addition, the last two letters of the corresponding ordinal numeral are often added to the number that indicates the day:

  • 18th November, 2001 (eighteenth)
  • 3rd October, 2012 (third)

Sometimes the entire date is expressed in numbers. In this case, the following spellings are possible:

  • 27/3/2007
  • 27-3-2007
  • 27.3.2007

However, you should note that in the American version of English, dates are written in a slightly different way: the name of the month comes first, and a comma is placed before the year:

  • March 27, 2010
  • April 1, 2008

Dates expressed in numbers alone can mean different time points in American and British English. The fact is that the British put the number in the first place, while the Americans, on the contrary, start with the month:

British English American English
Date/ Month/ Year  Month/ Date/ Year
5.4.2004 (5 April 2004) 5.4.2004 (4 May 2004)

So, be careful when you encounter abbreviated dates in these countries.

Also, as a rule, in American and British English, abbreviated forms are used instead of long names of months in writing:

  • Jan = January
  • Feb = February

And if you need to say or write the date in decades, it should look like this: the nineteen sixties = the 1960s, the twenties = the 20s.

And the last thing that might interest you on this topic is the mysterious BC and AD. The abbreviation BC stands for Before Christ, i.e. before our era. AD stands for Anno Domini, which is our era. In writing, BD is always placed after the date, while AD can be written both before and after.

  • 55 BC
  • AD 53 / 53 AD
