Last week I was on 5 different flights in 2 days, which made me think about Ebola outbreak in a slightly different way. With all the air travel the world has become really small, but at the same time the chance of spreading all sorts of diseases has definitely increased. That’s why I ended up choosing this ABC News coverage on Ebola. Watch it and see what is done in order to contain the outbreak in Africa. Background – names, organizations and event you should know about: Ebola is a disease of humans and other primates caused by an Ebola virus. Symptoms start two days to three weeks after contracting the virus, with a fever, sore throat, muscle pain, and headaches. Typically, vomiting, diarrhea, and rash follow, along with decreased function of the liver and kidneys. Around this time, affected people may begin to bleed both within the body and externally. HAZMAT or HazMat (hazardous materials) - solids, liquids, or gases that can harm people, other living organisms, property, or the environment. “HazMat teams" are personnel specially trained to handle dangerous goods. Dangerous goods include materials that are radioactive, flammable, explosive, corrosive, oxidizing, asphyxiating, biohazardous, toxic, pathogenic, or allergenic. This sentence is just one of many similar ones in this news coverage. They all have one thing in common, or rather do not have it – an auxiliary verb. In this case we cannot find “is”. But these are not headlines we’re talking about.Besides this news report alone has at least 5 other sentences that omit auxiliaries. The only explanation is that the news reports language is being simplified even more, and the auxiliary verbs are either contracted and almost not pronounced, or actually dropped after all. Let’s look at one more example: |
Це лише одне з багатьох схожих речень у сюжеті. У всіх них є одна спільна річ, точніше її немає – допоміжних дієслів. У цьому випадку ми б дуже хотіли знайти “is”. Втікача з в’язниці помічено на заправці |
Inside the two-bedroom apartment the team collecting all Duncan’s personal belongings, entering this bedroom. (the auxiliary “is” is nowhere to be seen. Тут не можемо знайти допоміжне дієслово “is”) |
Language 2
They are now concerned about the stigma that could come with being linked to Ebola whether they contract with virus or not. |
