Holodomor is a great tragedy in the history of Ukraine. And I find it really important that not only we, Ukrainians, but also other nations recognize it as one and talk about it. That’s why I suggest watching this VOA news story about the commemoration of 1932-33 Holodomor victims.
Background – names, organizations and event you should know about:
The Holodomor ("Extermination by hunger" or "Hunger-extermination"; derived from 'морити голодом', "to kill by starvation) was a famine in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1932 and 1933 that killed about 10 million Ukrainians. During the famine, which is also known as the "Famine-Genocide in Ukraine", millions of citizens of the Ukrainian SSR, the majority of whom were Ukrainians, died of starvation in a peacetime catastrophe unprecedented in the history of Ukraine. Since 2006, the Holodomor has been recognized by the independent Ukraine and many other countries as a genocide of the Ukrainian people by Soviet Union ruled by Stalin.
In order to understand this video we’ll need to know the following words. |

In this part I want to draw your attention to –ing form and infinitives again. So you remember that we need to use one of three ways to connect verbs in the sentences: -ing form, to-infinitive or bare infinite.
Everything seems quite obvious. But here we need to pay attention to the meaning as well. Verb “try” is one of the verbs that will change the meaning depending on the fact whether they are followed by –ing form or to-infinitive.
|
В этой части я хочу вновь обратить ваше внимание на форму глагола на -ing и инфинитивы. Мы помним, что мы должны использовать один из трех способов для объединения глаголов: форму на -ing, инфинитив с "to" или инфинитив без "to".

Language 2
They started to close archives, they contained materials about the crimes committed during Soviet times. |
|
In previous language point I told you about verb ‘try’, which changes meaning depending on the fact whether it’s followed by –ing form or to-infinitive. This language point will talk about the verbs that don’t care if they are followed by –ing form or “to-infinitive”. That’s right, such verbs actually exist.
|
В предыдущей части я рассказала вам о глаголе 'try', что изменяет значение в зависимости от того, за ним идет форма на -ing или инфинитив с "to". А в этой части поговорим о глаголах, которым все равно, что после них используется : форма на -ing или инфинитив с "to". Именно так, эти глаголы существуют.
