The Olympics. Разбор новостей

So watching news is a bit tricky if you are not a native speaker. There might be a couple of problems, which include the language of the reporters and hosts, the speed they talk with and unclear names and facts. But it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t even try.

Today we are going to start with the video report from the New York Times. Yes, it is a newspaper, but you can find short news videos on their website and on their YouTube channel.

I don’t think that you’ll be surprised with the topic of today’s news video: the Olympic Games 2014 in Sochi.

Background – names, organizations and event you should know about:

The IOC (the International Olympic Committee) – the committee responsible for organizing the Olympic Games and Youth Olympic Games, held in summer and winter, every four years.

Sochi – is a city in Russia, located on the Black Sea coast, which hosts the XXII Olympic Winter Games and XI Paralympic Winter Games in 2014.

Bidders - cities that have bid (taking part in the competition) to host any of the Summer and Winter Olympics.

In order to understand the following video, we will need to know these words and phrases.

Смотреть новости действительно может быть трудновато, если вы не носитель языка. Может возникнуть несколько проблем, среди которых специфический язык репортеров и ведущих, скорость речи и незнакомые названия и факты. Но это не значит, что не стоит хотя бы пробовать.

Сегодня мы начнем с видео новости в New York Times. Да, это газета, однако на их вебсайте и канале на YouTube можно найти коротенькие видеоновости.

Не думаю, что вас удивит тема сегодняшнего видео: Олимпийские игры в Сочи-2014.

Полезная информация – имена, организации и события, которые вам следует знать.

The IOC (Международный олимпийский комитет) – комитет, отвечающий за организацию Олимпийских игр и Молодежных Олимпийских игр, которые проводятся летом и зимой каждые 4 года.

Сочи – город в России, который находится на побережье Черного моря и принимает ХХІІ Зимние Олимпийские игры и Параолимпийские Зимние игры в 2014 году.

Bidders – города, борющиеся за право принимать Зимние и Летние Олимпийские игры.

Для того чтобы понять это видео, нам необходимо будет знать следующие слова и фразы.

And now replace the highlighted phrases in the following sentences by the ones we learnt. If you have difficulties with the task, try watching and inserting necessary phrases at the same time.

In this case Would  is used as a past form of modal verb Will to express what people wanted to do or were willing to do.

Dad wouldn’t let me watch TV on Sunday night.

This question seems very simple and clear. It is a great way to ask questions, when you don’t understand something or it seems illogical but people still did it, helps you to express wonder.

Structure of this question in really simple:

В этом случае Would используется как прошедшее время модального Will для того, чтобы выразить, что кто-то хотел сделать.

Этот вопрос кажется очень простым и понятным. Это отличный способ задавать вопросы, когда вы что-то не понимаете, или что-то кажется нелогичным, однако люди все равно это сделали, помогает выразить удивление.

Структура этого вопроса очень проста:

There are also other transitions to talk about chronological or logical sequence while stating your opinion, giving your arguments.

You can see only three first introductions, but there can surely be more. In such case we just use the corresponding number in the given patterns.

So now let’s watch the video one more time and find the answers to the following question (there should be three of them):

Вы видите только первые три вводных фразы, но их может быть и больше. В этом случае мы просто используем соответствующее число в указанных шаблонах.
