It’s the last issue of Tuesday Newsday this year. And since we are on the verge of starting a holiday season with Christmas lights, presents and carols, I decided that this Associated Press news story about Santa from Texas will be perfect to get us into the holiday mood. Let’s meet Santa Jim.

Background – names, organizations and event you should know about:

Lone Star Santas - an organization of men and women who live in Texas, and portray Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus, Elves and helpers. Santas can be either real bearded or designer bearded. This organization was formed for the exchange of ideas, networking, helping each other, and to provide general camaraderie. The only rule for this group is to talk and act the way Santa, Mrs. Claus, Elves and helpers would.

In order to understand this video we’ll need to know the following words.

4.   Well, everybody knows Santa Jim here in the neighborhood.
5.   So as soon as he walks in, it is an once knowing that this is genuine thing.
6.   Fletcher, in fact, keeps up his alter ego all year round.
7.   He first put on the red suit 8 years ago for a Christmas party.
8.   In the end it’s all for socially useful activity.

Language 1

Most people like to call me Mr. Fletcher but that’s not very Santa-like.

Santa-like is an adjective that means ‘resembling or having characteristics of Santa’ being like Santa’.

Apparently being called Mr. Fletcher does not resemble Santa at all, so it’s not Santa-like. At the same time wearing red clothes and white beard is really Santa-like.

Noun + like – is a very convenient way to form adjectives that have meaning “resembling or having characteristic of a noun mentioned”. So if you want to give something or someone characteristics of a specific person or professions, this “-like” is something you want. It can be used with dash ‘-‘ or without it.

Woman-like – resembling a woman
Sailor-like – resembling a soldier
Police-like – resembling police

Santa-like – предлог, что означает «напоминающий черты Санты».

Очевидно, то, что тебя называют Мистер Флетчер вообще не напоминает Санту, поэтому это не Santa-like. В то же время, если носить красную одежду и иметь белую бороду, то это по-сантовски.

Существительное + like – довольно удобный способ создания прилагательных, которые имеют значение «который имеет характеристики указанного существительного». Так что если вы хотите наделить что-то характеристиками человека, именно «-like» вам пригодится. Его можно писать через дефис или без него.

‘As soon as’ means “immediately after something” and is used to emphasize that the event will occur immediately after the other one.

As soon as he walks in, everybody knows this is the real thing. – It basically means that everybody knows immediately Santa Jim is real.

Usually ‘as soon as’ is used with Present Simple when we refer to the future.

As soon as he arrives, we can start to eat.
We can also use Present Perfect after ‘as soon as’ if we want to emphasize that the action will be completed at this point in the future.
As soon as I’ve finished, I’ll give you a call.

«As soon as» означает «сразу после чего-то» и используется, чтобы подчеркнуть, что событие состоится сразу после другого.
