Last weekend an unprecedented event took place in Vatican: two Popes were made saints at the same time. Watch the ABC coverage and find out what it was like. Also don’t miss a man talking to his hand in a bonus video from BBC=) Background – names, organizations and event you should know about: Pope Saint John Paul II (Latin: Ioannes Paulus II), sometimes called John Paul the Great, born Karol JózefWojtyła, was Pope from 16 October 1978 to his death in 2005. He was the second longest-serving pope in modern history and, as a Pole, the first non-Italian since Pope Adrian VI, who died in 1523. John Paul II was one of the most influential leaders of the 20th century. He is recognised as helping to end Communist rule in his native Poland and eventually all of Europe.[1] John Paul II significantly improved the Catholic Church's relations with Judaism, Islam, the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Anglican Communion. He was one of the most travelled world leaders in history, visiting 129 countries during his pontificate. As part of his special emphasis on the universal call to holiness, he beatified 1,340 people and canonised 483 saints. A key goal of his papacy was to transform and reposition the Catholic Church. His wish was "to place his Church at the heart of a new religious alliance that would bring together Jews, Muslims and Christians in a great [religious] armada." Pope Saint John XXIII (Latin: Ioannes XXIII), Angelo Giuseppe Roncalliwas the 261stPope from 28 October 1958 to his death in 1963. His selection was unexpected, and Roncalli himself had come to Rome with a return train ticket to Venice. He was the first pope to take the pontifical name of "John" upon election in more than 550 years. It was the name of antipope John XXIII (BaldassareCossa), who was removed by church council for the crimes he committedin 1415 in Constance. By choosing the name of John XXIII rather than John XXIV, Roncalli confirmed Cossa’s antipope status. Roncalli himself explained his choice by the fact that it was the name of his father, so it was dear to him. Pontificacy of John XXIII, which lasted almost 5 years, introduced a new course of Vatican policy, which corresponded to the modern reality and was aimed to start a dialogue between different countries and confessions, and also to raise social level of believers in different parts of the world. He called the Second Vatical Council on 28 October 1958. The Second Vatican Council (informally known as Vatican II) initiated by Pope Johan XXIII addressed relations between the Roman Catholic Church and the modern world. The council became ideally known for its renewal of Catholic doctrine in a modern timeline and perspective, including introduction of liturgy in national languages and also more open position in relationships with neo-Catholics. In this sentence we see Roman numbers used after the names of two Popes. It is a common practice in English language. So when do we use those? 1. when people with the same name occupy some specific post, for example the Pope, the King etc. In this case we use Roman number, like with John XXIII, John Paul II (two Popes), Louis XV (the king), Catherine I (the queen). When we speak such names, we usually use ordinal number (the numeral+th), so II – is spoken “the second”, XV – “the fifteenth”. 2. when in one family there are two or more people with exactly the same name, usually of different generations. In family names you can also use Arabic numbers. For example, John Smith and his son John Smith II (2nd). For family names it is also common to use abbreviations Jr. (junior) and Sr. (senior) as well. These are usually separated by commas when written, though it is not a must according to modern grammar rules. For example, John Smith Sr. and John Smith Jr. |

In all of these examples we don’t know what happened but we assume that there is only one explanation possible and we believe that it is true. In a Language Task 1 rewrite the names using Roman or Arabic numbers and abbreviations and in language task 2 use must have V3 |
