IELTS. READING. Завдання Locating Information

Locating Information

In this task, they are going to give you a number of statements that contain information from the passage and you have to decide which paragraph from the passage contains this information of the statement. This task is very similar to a “Matching Headings” task but in this case, we don’t get titles (headings) of paragraphs, just information that is contained in the paragraphs.

What's involved?

In this type of question, you have to find specific information in the paragraphs (or sections) of a text. The paragraphs (or sections) are identified by letters (A, B, C, etc.). You will need to write the letters of the correct paragraphs (or sections) in the boxes on your answer sheet. Not every paragraph (or section) may be used and some paragraphs (or sections) may be used more than once. When the paragraphs (or sections) may be used more than once, the instructions will say: ‘You may use any letter more than once’. In this task type students have to find which of the paragraphs in the text has information meaning the same as a given sentence, e.g. if Question 1 says "Bullets are becoming more dangerous all the time" and paragraph C has a sentence that says "The deadliness of bullets is rising" then the first answer is 1. C.

What skills are tested?

This type of question assesses your ability to scan a text in order to find specific information. Unlike Task Type 5 (Matching headings), it focuses on specific information rather than the main idea. You may have to find: specific details, an example, reason, description, comparison, summary or explanation. This task is always combined with one or two different tasks that involve reading the same text in more detail, e.g. True/ False/ Not Given or gap filling tasks.

How to approach it?

  1. Look at the questions first to understand the general meaning of the text.
  2. If you have not done so already read the whole text quickly to decide what each paragraph is about. If you do this, you are much more likely to predict which paragraph contains the right answer. This can save you lots of time.
  3. Look at each question in turn and try to predict which paragraph might contain the right answer.
  4. Generally do not just focus on key words in the question, think of the meaning of the question. Be aware that you are normally looking for synonyms rather words in the question.
  5. Read the paragraph you have predicted. Are there any sentences/phrases that relate to the question? If so, underline them and refer back to the question.
  6. If you cannot find the answer in that paragraph, move on to the next question and come back to it later. You may well find the answer later when you are looking at another question.

Step 1. Let’s go through the questions given in this sample reading

Academic Reading sample task - Identifying information

Questions 14-19

Sample Passage 7 has eight paragraphs labeled A-H.
Which paragraphs contain the following information?

Write the correct letter A-H in boxes 14-19 on your answer sheet.
(You may use any letter more than once.)

14. A comparison of the past and present transportation methods.
15. How driving habits contribute to road problems.
16. The relative merits of cars and public transport.
17. The writer’s prediction on future solutions.
18. The increasing use of motor motor vehicles.
19. The impact of the car on city development.

Step 2. Scan for words or phrases that indicate a comparison of the past and present. We look for words that refer to the past (especially years, prepositions for time, etc., verbs in past tense). Here is what we find:

Until a hundred years ago, most journeys were in the 20km range, the distance conveniently accessible by horse. Heavy freight could only be carried by water or rail. Invention of the motor vehicle brought personal mobility to the masses and made rapid freight delivery possible over a much wider area. In the United Kingdom, about 90 per cent of inland freight is carried by road. The world cannot revert to the horse-drawn wagon. Can it avoid being locked into congested and polluting ways of transporting people and goods?Step 3. Now that we have located the key words “until a hundred years ago”, we read this paragraph more carefully to make sure that this is the correct paragraph that contains a comparison of  past and present transport methods. We see that it talks about travelling by horse in the past, then about motor vehicles we use now, and how we cannot revert to (go back to) using horse-drawn wagons. We can confidently choose Paragraph C for the answer to question 14.

Hobbies for the Elderly

  1. Card making - This has become an increasingly popular hobby, as it’s very easy to start and cards can be as simple or complicated as skills allow. Best of all, it’s a lovely way for your parent to send wishes to all family and friends.
  2. Art - this can be done at your parent’s home, or in a local art class. It can be painting, drawing, sculpture, or pottery. It does not matter how skilled your parent is, as there are opportunities for all levels. The creative process is very absorbing and rewarding and it is a great way for your elderly relative to meet new people.
  3. Learning to use the Internet - if your aging parent likes the look of new technology, but has never learned how to use it, the Internet is very easy once someone has shown them how. It opens up a whole new world of information and they will be able to keep in touch easily with children and grandchildren via email.

Questions 1-2

Which section contains the following information? Write the correct letter (A-C) as your answer.

  1. A way to learn new methods of communication.
