Скільки цукру ти додаєш в чай? Скільки яблук ти з'їдають в день? - Ці питання починаються в англійському по-різному. І ми зараз розберемося, чому.

Let's remember (or learn) that there are two types of nouns – countable and uncountable.

When we want to talk about the amount (кількість), we need to remember that, for example, milk is uncountable and apples are countable.

	Countable nouns	Uncountable nouns
	Plural	Singular
Affirmative	There are some tomatoes.	There is some bread.
Negative	There aren't any tomatoes.	There isn't any bread.
Interrogative	Are there are any tomatoes?	Is there any bread?
Note: We use some in interrogative sentences for offers. Would you like some tea?

Приклади:

• I have some apples and some milk.

• I don’t have any apples. I don’t have any milk.

• Do you have any apples? – взагалі яблука є?

• Do you have any milk? – Чи є взагалі молоко?

Зауважте, що коли ми пропонуємо гостю «що-небудь випити», тобто використовуємо конструкцію "Would you like…?” – Хотіли б ви…..? - Ми пропонуємо не хоч скільки-небудь, а якусь певну кількість (наприклад чашечку чаю). В таких вопросах мы всегда используем some, а не any.

Приклад: Nice to see you, George! Would you like some coffee? (not any coffee).

When we use “any” in a positive sentence, it means that we don’t care which one. For example: “You can take any book you want, I have read all of them already!” – This means that whichever book I choose, I can take it, I can take any book.

Коли ми хочемо поговорити про велику кількість, то ось що ми використовуємо:

	Plural countable noun For example: apples	Uncountable noun
Багато (positive sentence) a big amount	A lot of
Negative sentence Мало - not a big amoung	Not many	Not much
Question How big is the amount?	How many..?	How much..?

MANY	MUCH
Use many with plural nouns.	Use much with collective nouns and singular nouns.
Chelsea doesn't have many friends.	Gerald doesn't have much money.

A lot of можна використовувати у всіх типах речень.

Much and many ми в стверджувальних не використовуємо.

Examples:

I have a lot of friends. I want to have a lot of money.
I don’t have much free time (negative sentence). = I don’t have a lot of free time.
He doesn’t drink much water. = He doesn’t drink a lot of water.
How much coffee did you buy?
How many books have you read?
Do you eat much seafood? = Do you eat a lot of seafood?
Do you have many friends? = Do you have a lot of friends?

Тобто використовувати a lot of - це безпрограшний варіант  Не можна тільки коли питання з how, how a lot of ми ж не скажемо!

Не забуваємо, що якщо у нас єдине число countable noun (наприклад 1 apple), ми у всіх типах пропозицій використовуємо a / an.

I have an apple and a dog.
Do you have a cat?
She doesn’t own a car.
