Background – names, organizations and event you should know about:

Aracataca is a river town founded in 1885. The town stands beside the river of the same name, the Aracataca river. The town is best known as the birth place of Nobel literature laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

One Hundred Years of Solitude is anovel by Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez, that was first published in Spanish in 1967. This books is considered the masterpiece of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, a metaphorical description of history of Columbia or Latin America. The book tells the story of the Buendía family and their town Macondo during 100 years. In one of his autobiographies, Gabriel Garcia Marquez admits that he wrote Macondo out of one of the town, he had spent his childhood in. Just like many other works of Marquez, One Hundred Years of Solitude is an example of magic realism. It is number 17 in a Newsweek rating of 100 Best Books of All Times.

Magic realism or magical realism is a genre where the elements of real and magical, routine and mythical, real and imaginary, mysterious are combined. Although it is most commonly used as a literary genre, magic realism also applies to film and the visual arts. Magic realism is usual for Latin American Literature.

In order to understand this video we’ll need to know the following words.

Language 1

That child would form the basis for his most famous book “A Hundred Years of Solitude”.

In this sentence we see Gabriel Garcia Marquez as a little boy who will later become a famous writer and will write “A Hundred Years of Solitude”. But since we talk about this even in the past, the first part is true for the moment (he is a boy), but the second is still not (he will form the basis later, it hasn’t happened yet), that’s why the second part uses would to refer to future from the moment in the past.

This sentence talks about the future seen from the past. This is called Future In the Past.

У цьому реченні ми бачимо Габріеля Гарсію Маркеса маленьким хлопчиком, що пізніше стане знаменитим письменником і напише “Сто років самотності”. Але так як ми говоримо про цю подію в минулому, перша частина на той момент вже збулася (він – маленький хлопчик), а друга ще ні (він сформує основу для книги пізніше), тому у другій частині використовується would, щоб говорити про майбутнє з моменту у минулому.

Це речення говорить про майбутьнє з точки зору минулого. Це називається Future in the Past.

•    At school I hated biology and I couldn’t imagine I would become a doctor. = When I was at school I hated biology. I became a doctor. У школі я ненавидів біологію, але став лікарем.
•    When he was 22, he went for his internship to Australia, where he would meet his wife. = He went to Australia for his internship. He met his wife in Australia. Він поїхав у Австралію, де потім зустріне свою дружину.
•    Tom ate strawberries every day when he was a kid, not suspecting that he would be allergic to them one day. = Tom ate strawberries every day when he was a kid. He is allergic to them now. Том їм полуниці щодня, не підозрюючи, що буде мати алергію на полуниці.

Language 2

It his youth Jose Arcadio Buendia and his men with wives and children, animals and kinds of domestic implements had crossed the mountains in search of an outlet to the sea and after 26 months they gave up the expedition and founded Macondo so that they would not have to go back.

In this sentence we talk only about things that happened in the past. We see an example of the Past Perfect tense. It is used to talk about two actions in the past, when one happened (Past Perfect) before the other one (Past Simple). Past Perfect is also used when we talk about a past action that happened before some time in the past.
Form: had + V3 (the third form of irregular verbs or regular verb + ed)

For example:

У цьому реченні ми говоримо лише про те, що сталося в минулому. Це приклад the Past Perfect tense. Він використовується, коли ми говоримо про дві дії в минулому, при цьому одна з них (Past Perfect) сталася перед іншою (Past Simple). Past Perfect також вживається, коли ми говоримо про дію в минулому, що відбулася до певного часу в минулому.
Форма: had + V3 (третя форма неправильних дієслів або правильне дієслово + ed)

Наприклад:

- I had cooked dinner before you asked me to eat out. (First I cooked dinner. Then you asked me to eat out. Спочатку я приготувала вечерю, а після того ти запросив мене в ресторан.)
- I called the police after I had heard suspicious noise downstairs. (First I heard the noise. After that I called the police. Спочатку я почула шум, а після того викликала поліцію.)
- I had finished my Japanese course by May 2008. (It happened some time before May, so in May I didn’t study any more. Я закінчила навчання до травня, у травні я вже не навчалася.)

Note: If we talk about two and more action that happened one right after the other one, we use Past Simple only.
- I found a key in my purse and opened the door.
- I made a sandwich, poured a cup of coffee and sat down at the table.

And now a task. In the following sentences open the brackets using Past Simple, Past Perfect or would:

Увага: Якщо ми говоримо про дві чи більше дій, що трапилися одна за одною, ми використовуємо лише Past Simple:
- Я знайшла ключ у сумці та відкрила двері.
- Я зробила сендвіч, налила чашку кави та сіла за стіл.

А тепер завдання. У наступних реченнях відкрийте лапки, використовуючи Past Simple, Past Perfect або would:

PS.It turns out animals can also be vandals. This footage showed by BBC proves that one specific dog was responsible for flat tires in the neighborhood. Watch and see how it’s possible.

Чекаю на ваші ідеї в коментарях або за електронною адресою: [email protected]

ЗИ:Виявляється, що тварини також можуть бути вандалами. Ця зйомка, показана BBC, доводить, що одна собака несла відповідальність за спущені колеса у околиці. Дивіться і побачита, як таке можливо.
