Новини. NBC News: Rosetta Lander “Philae” Lands on Comet

Автор: Ольга Янкова

Last week the scientists and space fans all over the world had a possibility to witness a big step in the exploring of space live on TV. NBC News story will explain us what it was and how it can help us solve the biggest mystery of life. Don’t miss an extra video from BBC which will explain what a 67P is in 60 seconds.

Background – names, organizations and event you should know about:

Comet Churyumov – Gerasimenko or simply 67P is a comet with a current orbital period of 6.45 years,a rotation period of approximately 12.4 hours and a maximum velocity of 135,000 km/h (38 km/s).67P is approximately 4.1 kilometres by 4.3 kilometres at its widest and longest dimensions. It will next come to perihelion (closest approach to the Sun) on 13 August 2015.Like most comets, it is named after its discoverers, Ukrainian astronomers Klim Ivanovych Churyumov and Svetlana Ivanovna Gerasimenko. They first observed it on photographic plates in 1969.

Rosetta is a robotic space probe built and launched by the European Space Agency to perform a detailed study of comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko (67P). Rosetta was launched on 2 March 2004 and reached the comet on 6 August 2014, becoming the first spacecraft to orbit a comet. The spacecraft consists of two main elements: the Rosetta space probe orbiter, which features 12 instruments, and the Philae robotic lander, with nine additional instruments. The Rosetta mission will orbit 67P for 17 months and is designed to complete the most detailed study of a comet ever attempted. The mission is controlled from the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC), in Darmstadt, Germany.

In order to understand this video we’ll need to know the following words.

Language 1

Despite the initially good news tonight confusion.

Despite” is a word that means “regardless of, without being affected by”. We usually use it when we need to contrast two points in the sentence.

“Despite the good news” means that we do have some good news but right now there’s another aspect to it, in our case confusion.

  • Despite his old age, he is still a very active person – it means that he is still active even though he is quite old. We kind of deny the first part about the old age.

Despite has a synonym – in spite of. These two phrases are identical in meaning. The only difference is a preposition “of” which must be used in “in spite of”.

We use noun or pronoun after despite or in spite of:

  • I’ll go to the party despite your prohibition.
  • In spite of  the rain we’ll go for a walk.

There’s also a little trick, when we can’t find a noun. We’ll say:
In spite of/ Despite + the fact that…

In this case you can continue with a usual sentence.

  • In spite of the fact that I don’t like dogs, you bought one for us.

Despite” – слово, що означає “не дивлячись на, незважаючи”. Зазвичай ми його використовуємо, щоб протиставити дві частини в реченні.

“Despite the good news” (попри хорошу новину) означає, що у нас таки є хороша новина, але зараз до неї додається ще один аспект, у нашому випадку збентеження.

  • Despite his old age, he is still a very active person – означає, що він досі активний, хоча й досить старий. Ми певним чином заперечуємо частину про старий вік.

Despite має синонім – in spite of. Ці дві фрази абсолютно однакові за значенням. Єдина відмінність – прийменник “of”, який завжди використовується з “in spite of”.

Після despite та in spite of ми використовуємо іменник або прийменник:

  • I’ll go to the party despite your prohibition. (попри заборону)
  • In spite of the rain we’ll go for a walk. (незважаючи на дощ)

Також є невеличка хитрість, коли ми не можемо знайти іменник. Ми скажемо:
In spite of/ Despite + the fact that (попти те, що...)
У такому випадку можна продовжити звичайним реченням.

  • Незважаючи на те, що я не люблю собак, ти купив нам собаку.

Language 2

That could help solve one of life’s biggest mysteries – how did we get here.

We are used to the fact that two verbs following each other need some connection: -ing form, to infinitive or bare infinitive. And usually there’s only one way to connect the verbs. But in same cases it isn’t so.
Like with the verb help. Help can be used with both “to infinitive” or “bare infinitive” without change in meaning.

“That could help to solve” and “that could help solve” would have absolutely identical meaning.
Some say that “help to solve” is more common for British English while “help solve” is clearly American English, native speakers from both countries use these infinitives in whichever way they like.
Another word that can take both bare or to infinitive is dare (expressing courage or lack of it)
He didn’t dare (to) jump into the pool.

Ми звикли, що зазвичай два дієслова вимагають певного поєднання: форма на -ing, інфінітив з “to” чи інфінітив без “to”. І зазвичай є лише один спосіб поєднання дієслів. Але є й виключення з правил.
Наприклад дієслово help (допомагати). Help можна використовувати з інфінітивом з “to” чи без нього без зміни значення.

“That could help to solve” та “that could help solve” (це може допомогти розгадати) мають абсолютно ідентичне значення.
Дехто стверджує, що “help to solve” більш звичний для британської англійської, а “help solve” – для американської, проте носії мови обох країн використовують інфінітиви після help так, як їм заманеться.
Ще одне слово, що може використовуватися з обома інфінітивами – dare (насмілитися, якщо воно використовується у контексті відваги чи її відсутності)
Він не наважився стрибнути в басейн.
