What’s surprise? To quote Wikipedia, surprise is a short emotional state, which we feel because something unexpected (неожиданное) happened.
Different people express it in different ways:
So how do we express surprise in English?
Here’s how:
- Unbelievable! – невероятно!
- Incredible!
- Amazing!
- No!.. (falling intonation) – да ладно…
- I’m speechless! – я потерял(а) дар речи!
- That's the last thing I expected. – это последнее, чего я ожидал
- What a surprise! – Какой сюрприз! Как неожиданно!
- Really? – Правда?
- How nice! – как классно!
- That’s stunning!
And here are some slang phrases for showing surprise:
- No way! = I don’t believe you
- Wow! – Вау!
- Get out of here!
- Blimey!
- Holy cow!
- You don’t say! – да что ты говоришь
- You’re kidding!
- Well, I never… - не, ну я никогда (даже и не думал)
- That’s a real blower! = This is a big surprise.
- Whoa! = Wow
- OMG = Oh my God! – show that you’re surprised
