Top News. Річниця смертельного голоду 1930-х років в Україні

Автор: Ольга Янкова

Holodomor is a great tragedy in the history of Ukraine. And I find it really important that not only we, Ukrainians, but also other nations recognize it as one and talk about it. That’s why I suggest watching this VOA news story about the commemoration of 1932-33 Holodomor victims.

Background – names, organizations and event you should know about:

The Holodomor ("Extermination by hunger" or "Hunger-extermination"; derived from 'морити голодом', "to kill by starvation) was a famine in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1932 and 1933 that killed about 10 million Ukrainians. During the famine, which is also known as the "Famine-Genocide in Ukraine", millions of citizens of the Ukrainian SSR, the majority of whom were Ukrainians, died of starvation in a peacetime catastrophe unprecedented in the history of Ukraine. Since 2006, the Holodomor has been recognized by the independent Ukraine and many other countries as a genocide of the Ukrainian people by Soviet Union ruled by Stalin.

In order to understand this video we’ll need to know the following words.

Language 1

Yanukovych was trying not to talk about the crimes of the Soviet past.

In this part I want to draw your attention to –ing form and infinitives again. So you remember that we need to use one of three ways to connect verbs in the sentences: -ing form, to-infinitive or bare infinite.

In this sentence we see that verbs try and talk are connected with “to infinitive”: try not to talk.

Everything seems quite obvious. But here we need to pay attention to the meaning as well. Verb “try” is one of the verbs that will change the meaning depending on the fact whether they are followed by –ing form or to-infinitive.
Try + to infinitive – means that we put great effort into action, we do our best to complete it and usually it’s not that easy.
Try not to talk – means that it’s not always possible, but we do our best to avoid talking.
Try to open that door to get out of the room. – means that it’s not that easy, you need to make some efforts for that.
Try + -ing form – means that we’re experimenting. It’s not hard and we don’t need to do our best for the result. We just want to see what happens if we do this.
It’s hot, try opening the door – means that I want to see what happens when you open the door. It’s not hard, I’m just curious if it’ll give the result I want.
I feel tired all the time, I should try sleeping more. – It means that sleeping might be a way out for me not to feel tire. Other ways are possible too but I want to see what happens if I sleep more.

У цій частині я хочу знову звернути вашу увагу на форму дієслова на –ingта інфінітиви. Ми пам’ятаємо, що ми маємо використовувати один з трьох способів для поєднання дієслів: форму на –ing, інфінітив з ‘to’ чи інфінітив без ‘to’.

У цьому реченні ми бачимо, що дієслова try ( намагатися) та talk (говорити) поєднані з інфінітивом з ‘to’: try not to talk (намагатися не говорити).
Все здається досить очевидним. Але у цьому випадку необхідно звертати увагу й на значення. Дієслово “try”одне з тих, що змінюють значення в залежності від того, чи за ними йде форма на –ing чи інфінітив з ‘to’.
Try + інфінітив з ‘to’ – означає, що ми докладаємо багато зусиль для виконання дії, ми робимо все від нас залежне, щоб її виконати, і зазвичай це непросто.
Try not to talk (спробуй не говорити) – означає, що це не завжди можливо, але ми робимо все, щоб уникати розмов.
Try to open that door to get out of the room. (Спробуй відкрити ті двері, щоб вийти з кімнати) – це означає, що це не дуже легко, необхідно докласти зусиль, щоб відкрити двері.
Try + форма –ing – використовується, коли ми говоримо про експеримент. Це зовсім не важко, і нам не потрібно докладати зусиль для результату. Нам просто цікаво, що буде, якщо ми щось зробимо.
It’s hot, try opening the door. (Тут спекотно, спробуй відкрити двері) – це означає, що мені цікаво, що буде, якщо ти відкриєш двері. Це не важко, мені просто цікаво6 яи я отримаю бажаний результат.
I feel tired all the time. I should try sleeping more. (Я постійно втомлена. Маю спробувати більше спати) – це означає, що сон може бути рішенням проблеми. Є й інші варіанти, але мені цікаво, що буде, якщо я буду більше спати.

Language 2

They started to close archives, they contained materials about the crimes committed during Soviet times.

In previous language point I told you about verb ‘try’, which changes meaning depending on the fact whether it’s followed by –ing form or to-infinitive. This language point will talk about the verbs that don’t care if they are followed by –ing form or “to-infinitive”. That’s right, such verbs actually exist.

They started to close or They started closing would not only be both correct, but also have identical meaning.
Start is not the only verb that we can use with both: -ing form and to-infinitive, without change in meaning. Others are:
begin to read/reading
continue to listen/listening
cease to exist/existing
commenceto use/using
omitto say/saying

У попередній частині я розповіла вам про дієслова ‘try’, що змінює значення в залежності від того, чи за ними йде форма на –ing чи інфінітив з ‘to’.А у цій частині поговоримо про дієслова, яким всеодно, що після них використовується: форма на –ingчи інфінітив з ‘to’. Саме так, ці дієслова таки існують.

They started to close чи They started closing(вони почали закривати) не тільки будуть правильними, але ще й мають ідентичне значення.
Start (починати) – не єдине дієслово, що використовується з обома: формою на –ing та інфінітивом з ‘to’ без зміни значення. А ось й інші:
почати читати
продовжити слухати
припинити існувати
почати використовувати
упустити сказати (дослівно) – не сказати
