Читай новини і вчи англійську – Tennessee whiskey law sparks spirited debate

Автор: Ольга Янкова

Today we are going to find out about one more kind of war – a whiskey war in Tennessee – the home of one the most popular kinds of whiskey in the world. CBS This Morning will explain how whiskey can be controversial.

Background – names, organizations and event you should know about:

Tennessee whiskey is straight bourbon whiskey produced in Tennessee (The USA). However, most current producers of Tennessee whiskey disclaim references to their products as "Bourbon". Since Tennessee whiskey goes through slow filtration through maple charcoal before getting into the barrel while bourbon is filtered right before being bottled. As the result the drink has really smooth taste and distinctive aroma.

George Dickel is a brand of Tennessee whiskey produced in Cascade Hollow, Tennessee. George Dickel's Tennessee Whisky uses the traditional Scottish spelling of whisky (as opposed to whiskey) because Dickel believed his product to be as smooth and high in quality as the best Scotch whiskies. The distillery is part of the American Whiskey Trail and offers tours to the public.

Jack Daniel's is a brand of sour mash Tennessee whiskey that is the highest selling American whiskey in the world, which is produced in Lynchburg, Tennessee, the USA since the 19th century. The drink consists of 80% corn, 12% barley and 8%rye and based on clear spring water and contains about 40% of alcohol. Despite being the location of a major operational distillery, Jack Daniel's home county of Moore is a dry county, so the product is not available for consumption at stores or restaurants within the county.

In order to understand this video we’ll need to know the following words.

Language 1

George Dickel now says the state’s law should never have been passed.

Should never have been passed is another example of  Past Modals, that are used to speculate about events in the past.
This past modal is used to criticize past actions. We also can replace should with ought to without change in meaning.

Should never have been passed – це ще один приклад  Past Modals, що використовуються для обговорення подій в минулому. Цей past modal використовується, щоб критикувати дії в минулому. Також ми можемо замінити should на ought to без зміни значення.

Should/Ought to + (not) have + V3 (third form of irregular verb or regular verb +ed)
(третя форма неправильного дієсл. чи правильне дієсл. + ed)

Also I want to draw your attention to the following facts:
1. This critical phrase uses never instead of not in order to intensify negative opinion about it.
2. The verb is used in passive voice so instead of Have + V3 it becomes Have Been + V3
A couple of examples:
Також я хочу звернути вашу увагу на наступні речі:
1. У цьому критичному висловлюванні використовується never замість not, щоб посилити негативне ставлення.
2. Дієслово використовується в пасивному стані, тому замість Have + V3 використовуємо Have Been + V3
Кілька прикладів:

You ought to have listened to your mom! (You didn’t listen to your mom. Ти не послухав маму)
We shouldn’t have bought this old car. It keeps breaking down. (We bought an old car and regret it now. Ми купили стару машину і тепер про це жалкуємо.)
She should never have opened that door! It was clear that the serial killer was behind it from the start. (She opened the door to the serial killer. Вона відкрила двері серійному вбивці.)
I ought to have been informed about your decision earlier. (Nobody informed me about the decision. Мене не попередили про рішення.)
They shouldn’t have been threatened with imprisonment. (Somebody threatened them with imprisonment. Їм погрожували в’язницею.)

Language 2

We very passionately believe that Tennessee whiskey is something that is worth protecting and defending.

Be worth (doing) something is a phrase that can be used to mean the following:
- to say that something is interesting, useful, or helpful
- to say that someone should do something because they will gain something or benefit from it.
Please note that we always use V+ing or a noun after worth since it is considered to be a preposition in such sentences. (and we always use V+ing or a noun after preposition)

Here are a couple of example. And last two phrases are just worth remembering.

Be worth (doing) something – варте (того, щоб) - фраза, що може використовуватися з наступним значенням:
- сказати, що щось є цікавим, корисним чи може допомогти
- сказати, що хтось має щось зробити, тому що отримає від цього користь.
Будь ласка, зверніть увагу, що після worth ми завжди використовуємо V+ing чи іменник, так як worth у цьому випадку вважається прийменником (а ми завжди вживаємо V+ing чи іменник після прийменників)
Ось кілька прикладів, а дві останні фразі просто варто запам’ятати.

This book is worth reading if you want to find out more on first aid. (It is useful. Варто почитати – це корисно)
Is this movie worth seeing? (
Is it interesting? Варто подивитися – це цікаво?)
It’s worth checking if the client is happy with us. (We will benefit from it. Варто перевірити – ми від цього отримаємо користь)
It’s worth fighting for your country. (
We will benefit from it. Варто воювати  – ми від цього отримаємо користь)
Is it worth your tears? (
Will you benefit from it? Варто твоїх сліз?)
It’s worth it! – Воно варте того!
It’s not worth it! – Воно того не варте!

Today I’ll ask you to think about the following:
1. What should you have done differently last month? Is there something that you regret?
2. And do you think is worth protecting?

I’m waiting for your ideas in the comments or my e-mail: [email protected]

PS. Today’s bonus is also about a cute gorilla baby. I hope it’ll make you smile

Сьогодні я попрошу вас подумати про наступне.

1. Що ви могли б зробити інакше минулого місяця? Чі є щось, про що ви жалкуєте (should have done)
2. Що ви думаєте варто захищати? (worth protecting)

Чекаю на ваші ідеї в коментарях або за електронною адресою: [email protected]
