Top News. 10 років з виходу першого відео на YouTube

 

It seems absolutely normal to get on YouTube and start watching whatever you find there, including the news videos we watch every Tuesday. Did you know that a bit more than 10 years ago there was no possibility like that? So it was 10 years ago when the first YouTube video was uploaded. And CBS New will tell us all about it. 

 

Fun facts about YouTube:

  • YouTube was founded by three former employees of PayPal. 
  • In October 2006, Google bought YouTube for $1.65 billion in stocks, just 18 months after YouTube’s creation.    
  • The first month after its creation, YouTube had 3 million visitors. By the end of the site’s first year, the number of visitors reached over 38 million.
  • As of 2010, it would take 1,700 years to watch every YouTube video.
  • Every second there are 46,296 YouTube videos being viewed all around the world.
  • Several countries have blocked YouTube at some time, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Pakistan, Syria, Tajikistan, and Turkey.
  • Over 1 billion unique users visit YouTube each month.
  • The longest video on YouTube is 571 hours, 1 minute, and 41 seconds. The video is a slideshow of Jonathan Harchick's (the video's creator) trip to Chili in 2009.

 

 

In order to understand this video we’ll need to know the following words.

Language 

And that’s pretty much there is to say.

Pretty much – really pretty, beautiful or just good-looking? Unfortunately, none of the above. 
In this phrase word “pretty” has nothing to do with appearance. It’s talking about an extent, degree of something. Pretty much means kind of, quite, more or less. 


But why do we use “pretty”? This is one of ways to express your feelings when you tell stories in everyday, casual speech. In this case pretty is used as an adverb and means “somewhat”, “so-so”, “kind of”. It can be used before an adjective or an adverb


For example:

  • This chocolate is pretty good, but I’ve tasted better. (this chocolate is somewhat/kind of good)
  • He’s pretty smart. (the boy is somewhat smart)
  • I’m pretty sure I’m going to the seaside. (I’m almost sure, kind of sure)
  • That’s pretty much all I wanted to say. (it’s kind of all the information)

Pretty much – дуже симпатичний, прекрасний чі просто гарний? На жаль, жоден з цих варіантів.
У цій фразі слово “pretty” не має ніякого відношення до зовнішності. Воно говорить про ступінь чогось. Pretty much означає – типу, ніби, більш-менш.


Але чому використовуємо “pretty”? Це один з варіантів висловити свої почуття, коли ми розповідаємо щось у повсякденному житті, щоденних розмовах. У цьому випадку pretty використовується як прислівник та означає досить, трохи, нібито. Його можна використовувати з прикметниками та прислівниками.


Наприклад:

  • Цей шоколад досить добрий, але я куштував і краще. (цей шоколад ніби хороший)
  • Він досить розумний. (хлопчик дещо розумний)
  • Я майже впевнений, що поїду до моря. (я нібито впевнений)
  • Це практично все, що я хотіла сказати. (начебто вся інформація)
