For our country the phrase “May Holidays” usually means first ten days of May even though we only celebrate May 1 and May 9. At the same time in the USA May 5 is also a holiday – Cinco de Mayo. Background information:

The Battle of Puebla took place on May 5th, 1862, near the city of Puebla during the French intervention in Mexico. The battle ended in a victory for the Mexican Army over the occupying French forces. The French eventually overran the Mexicans in subsequent battles, but the Mexican victory at Puebla against a much better equipped and larger French army provided a significant morale boost to the Mexican army and also helped slow the French army's advance towards Mexico City. There were a total of 10,540 soldiers in the war. 462 French soldiers died in combat. Only 83 Mexican soldiers died in the battle.
Tequila – alcohol beverage made from the blue agave plant. It is most often made at a 38-40% alcohol content. There are for kinds of tequila: Blanco (silver) – clear spirit, unaged and bottled immediately after distillation, Joven (gold) – unaged silver tequila that may be flavored with caramel coloring, oak extract, glycerin or sugar-based syrup, Reposado – aged a minimum of two months but less than a year in oak barrels, Anejo – aged a minimum of one year, but less than ten years in small oak barrels.
Guacamole – an avocado-based dip that began with the Aztecs in Mexico. It is traditionally made by mashing ripe avocados and sea salt with mortar and pestle. Some recipes call for tomato, onion, garlic, lemon or lime juice, chili or cayenne pepper, yogurt, cilantro or basil, jalapeno and additional seasonings.
Pound – a unit of mass used in English-speaking countries, equals 0.45359237 kg.

Пізніше французи перемогли мексиканців у наступних битвах, проте перемога мексиканців в Пуебла проти набагато сильнішої армії з кращим оснащенням значно посилила дух мексиканської армії та допомогла заповільнити наступ французької армії на Мехіко. Текі́ла — спиртний напій із соку серцевини блакитної агави. Міцність напою 38-40%. Language

Although the French would return just a year later to recapture Puebla and the rest of Mexico, the battle of Puebla created a sense of national pride and it was declared a national holiday.

Would return – is an example of what is called Future in the Past in English grammar. This means that we want to say that in the past we believed something would happen in the future or, like in this case, we talk about future events regarding the time that is described.
So the battle was won in 1862, but in 1863 the French would return. – Even though it happened in the past, from the point of view of 1862 it’s future.

Structure:
would + bare infinitive

For example:

When he was 18 he went to college, where he would meet his future wife. (He met her in the past, but it was future regarding his 18th birthday)
My brother always knew he would become a doctor. (He is a doctor know, but he knew it when he was a kid. Regarding his age it was in the future)
I knew that you would make dinner. (I am eating it right now, but this past morning when I thought about the dinner, it was in the future).

Note:
We cannot use Future in the Past in time clauses (like any other future)
I told my brother that when he ~~would want~~ wanted to eat, he would have to cook for himself

Would return – приклад того, що ми називаємо майбутнім у минулому у граматіци англійської мови. Це означає, що ми хочемо сказати, що у минулому ми вірили щось станеться в майбутньому, або як у цьому випадку, ми говоримо про майбутні події з точки зору минулого часу, що описується.
Отже битву виграли у 1862, але в 1863 французи would return - повернуться. – Хоча це сталося в минулому, з точки зору 1862 року це майбутнє.
