Top News.

Easter is the celebration of the resurrection of Christ; it is the oldest Christian holiday and one of the most important days of the year. But except its religious meaning, Western cultures also celebrate it as kids’ holiday with presents and chocolates. ABC News will tell us about the way one woman from Florida chooses to celebrate Easter.

Background information:
•    Americans spend $1.9 billion on Easter candy. That’s the second biggest candy holiday after Halloween.
•    70% of Easter candy purchased is chocolate.
•    76% of Americans think the ears of a chocolate bunny should be the first to be eaten.
•    The art of painting eggs is called pysanka, which originated in Ukraine. It involves using wax and dyes to color the egg.
•    Egg dyes were once made out of natural items
•    such as onion peels, tree bark, flower petals, and juices.
•    The first story of a rabbit (later named the “Easter Bunny”) hiding eggs in a garden was published in 1680.
•    The largest ever Easter egg hunt was in Florida, where 9,753 children searched for 501,000 eggs.
•    The custom of giving eggs at Easter has been traced back to Egyptians, Persians, Gauls, Greeks and Romans, for whom the egg was a symbol of life.

In order to understand this video we’ll need to know the following words.

Language

A woman who loves Easter so much she spends all year giving the Easter Bunny a hand for the holiday.

Relative clauses – a way to give additional information about something without starting a new sentence.  When we use relative clauses we can avoid repeating some words and make our story more fluent.

A woman loves Easter. She spends all year giving the Easter Bunny a hand for the holiday. = both sentences talk about the same woman, so we can combine them with the help of relative pronoun who.
A woman who loves Easter spends all year helping the Easter Bunny.   – in this case ‘who loves Easter’ is additional information we want to give about this woman.
We can also talk about other things using other relative pronouns and adverbs:

  • Who – people
  • Which – things and animals
  • Whose – possession for people, animals and things
  • Where – place
  • When – time
  • That – can be used for people, animals and things instead of who or which

For example:
- That table, which you sold me, is really comfortable, thank you.
- The girl whose car you borrowed is my cousin.
- The restaurant where we had our first date is closed.
- Last night, when you saw me, I was jogging.

Sometime relative clauses give you important information. You cannot understand what is going on without it. They are called Defining Relative Clauses.
The girl whose car you borrowed is my cousin. – Not some girl but this specific girl that you took the car from.
The restaurant where we had our first date is closed. – Not any restaurant but that specific restaurant.

Sometimes relative clauses give some additional information. But even if we omit them, the sentence doesn’t lose its meaning. They are called NON-Defining Relative Clauses. They are put in commas.
Last night, when you saw me, I was jogging. – So the time is just some additional information.
That table, which you sold me, is really comfortable, thanks. – the clause can be omitted.
NOTE: we don’t use THAT in non-defining relative clause.
Tom, that who is dancing on stage, is my school friend.

A woman loves Easter. She spends all year giving the Easter Bunny a hand for the holiday.

  • Where – місце
  • When – час
