Polly and her Magic Knife

When I grow up, I will go to the restaurant. I will call them and book a table in advance. I will say something like “Could I have a table for two, please?” At the restaurant a waiter will bring me a napkin, a plate, a fork and a glass and ask me: “What would you like?”

But now I’m a little girl and I’m not allowed to go to the restaurant. That’s why I’m pretending to have a restaurant at home. I’m serving the table and bringing a menu. There are a lot of different dishes in my menu: starters, snacks, main course and desserts.  And there are free appetizers to stimulate customer’s appetite. 

My Teddy Bear came to my restaurant and asked for some meat as a main course.

-    Do you want it boiled or fried? – I asked my customer.

-    Can you roast it, please, - said the bear.

I took some spices, like salt and pepper, and herbs to cook the meat. But the piece of meat was too big and I took the knife to cut it. And I couldn’t do that! I tried again and again until my knife started talking to me.

-    I don’t cut meat, - said the knife.

-    Are you talking? – was my first question.  - Why can’t you cut meat? – I asked my second question.

-    You see, - answered the setup, - people shouldn’t kill animals and fish in order to eat them whereas people can eat fruit and vegetables. You can bake bread and different rolls and buns, you can make pasta.  It’s cruel and not right to eat meat of dead beings.

-    He is right! – said the tea spoon. – People should drink only tea.

-    And coffee! – said the coffee-pot.

-    And maybe they should eat some dessert, - said the dessert spoon.

But the soup spoon didn’t think so:

-    You see, - said the soup spoon, - people get a lot of useful and necessary stuff like protein from meat. You should eat meat and fish to be healthy and strong.

All cutleries started a quarrel. It was noisy and stuffy in the kitchen.

-    All these spoons, cups and saucers are stupid, - said the magic knife.  – Only I can decide what to cut and what to save. I’m the cleverest and the most powerful in the world. You, Polly, should go to you Teddy Bear and explain to him that he mustn’t eat meat.

So Polly went to the bear. She was going to tell him everything about the meat of dead animals and about rolls, but the bear said: “Could I have the bill, please?”
